Nigerian forward Osimhen answers critics with goal in Napoli win

Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen was back among the goals as Napoli defeated Udinese 4-1 at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in Serie A on Wednesday night.

The Nigerian forward, who has recently come under intense scrutiny from Napoli fans and was the subject of a controversial post on the club’s TikTok platform after his penalty miss in their last game, puts an end to his four-game goalless streak with a first-half finish.

Osimhen slotted the ball into the bottom corner past goalkeeper Marco Silvestri after receiving a sublime pass from Italian winger Matteo Politano in the 39th minute.

Polish midfielder Piotr Zielinski opened the scoring for the home team in the 19th minute after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was brought down in the box.

Kvaratskhelia scored Napoli’s third on the 74th-minute mark. The Georgian stole the ball off a Udinese defender before dinking it over Silvestri and tapping it into an empty net.

Although Serbian midfielder Lazar Samardzic pulled one back for Udinese in the 80th minute, Giovanni Simeone restored the Partenopei’s three-goal lead just a minute later with a thumping header from inside the box.

The victory helped Napoli return to winning ways in the league after their three-game winless run, which included a defeat to Lazio and two draws against Genoa and Bologna.

The Seria The defending champions move into fifth place in the standings with 11 points, and Osimhen takes his season tally to four league goals in six games.
