Nigeria has officially secured the hosting rights for the 2nd edition of the African Schools Games, scheduled to take place in 2027, Afrosport reports.
The announcement was made on Tuesday in Algiers, following a competitive bidding process in which Nigeria emerged victorious over other strong contenders, including South Africa and Kenya.
Reacting to the milestone, the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, expressed pride and enthusiasm, describing the win as a significant step forward for sports development in Nigeria and across the continent.
“This is a major victory for Nigeria and a promising moment for the future of African sports,” Olopade said. “Our successful bid is a reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to sports excellence and national development.”
“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, Nigeria is reclaiming its place as a hub for sports excellence in Africa. We are not only investing in the growth of our sports economy but also strengthening our image as a preferred destination for global sporting events. In 2027, Nigeria will proudly host a world-class African Schools Games that will inspire and elevate young athletes across the continent.”
Nigeria’s impressive track record in hosting major sports competitions played a critical role in securing the bid. Events such as the National Sports Festival and the 3rd CAA Africa U18-U20 Athletics Championships have drawn praise for their top-tier organisation, quality infrastructure, and athlete-friendly experience.
Hon. Olopade also extended his gratitude to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for entrusting Nigeria with the Games, assuring that preparations will begin immediately to ensure an outstanding and memorable tournament.
Leading Nigeria’s successful bid were Hon. Bukola Olopade and President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel, who together championed the country’s vision for the Games.
