Nigeria have been stripped of their gold medal in the women’s 4x100m relay race at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The decision was made after the disqualification of Nzubechi Grace Nwokocha who was guilty of doping by the Commonwealth Games Federation Court.
In August 2022, Nwokocha took the anchor leg for Team Nigeria as they set a new African record of 42.10 seconds to win the thrilling race ahead of home favourites, Team England at the Alexander Stadium.
Nigeria’s disqualification promotes England to first place while Jamaica and Australia finish in the second and third places respectively.
The Organisers of Birmingham 2022 relayed the judgement of the Commonwealth Games Federation Couth that Nwokocha committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) under the 2022 Commonwealth Games Anti-Doping Rules (ADRs).
It read: “Presence of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in the Athlete’s Sample, pursuant to Article 2.1 of the ADRs; and Use or Attempted Use by an Athlete of a Prohibited Substance or a Prohibited Method, pursuant to Article 2.2 of the ADRs.
“The Federation Court disqualified her results from the women’s 100m, women’s 200m and the women’s 4x100m relay, with all resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any points and prizes.”
Nigeria women’s 4x100m relay team at the 2022 Commonwealth Games was made up of Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma and Nwokocha.
