Nigeria drop to fifth in Africa, 38th in global FIFA ranking

‘Super Eagles are not ready for World Cup’ – Nigerians react

FIFA has updated the world rankings for men’s international football, and it is bad news for the Super Eagles as they drop to 38th position in the world as their poor run in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers still haunt them.

Argentina, the current world champions retain their top spot, with France and Belgium still occupying the second and third positions respectively.

The top three countries remain unmoved in their dominance as the Copa America is set to begin on Friday and the Euro 2024 currently underway in Germany.

Within the top ten, Portugal (6th), Netherlands (7th) and Spain (8th), retain their positions on the table but there is movement between Brazil, who move up to fourth and England who switched positions with them to move to fifth.

Italy, now 10th, also lose their 9th spot to Croatia, who move up by a spot.

Other African countries in the top 100 also saw significant positive change like Ghana, who move up by four positions to 64th and Benin up to 91st (up by 6)

Namibia the latest African country in the top 100 (97th) , climbed nine places but the most impressive progression on the list comes from Liberia who moved to 142nd and are still unbeaten this year, winning two of their last three World Cup qualifiers.

The next edition of the FIFA rankings will be published by July 18, with countries currently participating in various continental competitions expected to shape up the ranking.
