Thailand’s government has approved a $1.2 billion bid to host a Formula 1 street race in the capital city of Bangkok in 2028, Afrosport reports.
According to Tourism Minister Sorawong Thienthong, the bid is worth 40 billion baht ($1.23 billion) and if successful, could win a contract to host a race from 2028 to 2032.
Back in March, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra met with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, stating a feasibility study would be commissioned into hosting a Grand Prix in a bid to help promote tourism in the southeast Asian country, one of the key drivers of its economy.
Thailand already has an FIA-accredited track in the city of Buriram which currently hosts a race in MotoGP.
