The No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama, put up a new career-high 38 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 132-121 win over the Phoenix Suns at the Footprint Center on Thursday night.
The French teenager also shot 15 of 26 from the field, grabbed 10 rebounds and had two blocks to ensure the Spurs completed a sweep of the Suns in their double-header, despite latter threatening a comeback after erasing San Antonio’s 27-point lead in the fourth quarter.
The 19-year-old, who was playing in just his fifth game in the NBA, scored 10 of Spurs’ 12 points immediately after Keita Bates-Diop’s 3-pointer tied the game at 116 with about 4:21 left on the clock in the fourth.
“Someone’s got to do it,” Wembanyama said after the game. “Tomorrow it might be one of my teammates.”
“Every game, we try to find the sweet spot where we need to hurt them.
“Today it might be this way, tomorrow it might be someone else. It’s how great teams work.”
Wemby was DOMINANT in the @spurs back-and-forth W in Phoenix, scoring a career-high 38 PTS to go along with 10 REB and 2 BLK.
