Man Utd star Rashford closes in on Osimhen’s league record

Marcus Rashford was on the scoresheet as Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Brentford on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils were without a win in their last three league games and dropped out of the top four after they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United on Sunday. They were without a goal in that period as well.

All of that changed in Wednesday’s encounter at Old Trafford where Rashford struck in the 27th minute from close range.

It was his 11th Premier League goal since the end of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which is the most of any player in the Premier League.

He is also just one goal behind Nigeria and Napoli forward Victor Osimhen who has 12 league goals in that period as well, the most of any player in Europe’s top five leagues.

The Lagos-born forward is the leading scorer in the Italian Serie A this season with 21 goals in 23 outings.

Rashford however leads for most goals in all competitions after the World Cup in Europe’s top five leagues with 21 strikes. The 25-year-old English forward has also scored 19 competitive goals at Old Trafford this term, equaling the tally set by United’s all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney during the 2011-12 season.

Overall, Rashford has scored 26 goals in all competitions and provided nine assists.

He will have another opportunity to score more goals when United host Everton in Saturday’s early kick-off.
