Man City hopeful of Haaland return before end of the season after injury setback

Manchester City are hopeful Erling Haaland will return before the end of the season after suffering an ankle injury in the comeback 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Bournemouth on Sunday, Afrosport reports.

The Norwegian striker was substituted on the hour mark and was seen leaving the Vitality Stadium on crutches as he hurt his left ankle after Bournemouth right back Lewis Cook landed awkwardly on him in a 56th-minute tackle.

The score was 1-1 when Haaland went off, having scored City’s equaliser after having a penalty saved in the first half.

City in a statement on the club website, revealed the lanky striker will seek further evaluation from a specialist to know the extent of the injury while hoping he will be fit enough for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in the summer.

“Manchester City FC can confirm that Erling Haaland has suffered an injury to his left ankle,” read the statement.

“The Norwegian striker sustained the injury during Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final victory away at AFC Bournemouth.

“Erling underwent initial tests in Manchester on Monday morning and will now seek specialist consultation to confirm the full extent of the injury.

“Assessment remains ongoing to ascertain a full prognosis. The expectation is that Erling will be fit in time to play a further part in the remainder of this season, including this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup.

“Everyone at the Club wishes Erling a speedy recovery.”

Haaland’s goal against Bournemouth was his 30th of the season in all competitions, making him the first player to score 30 or more goals in each of their first three seasons for a Premier League club since Ruud van Nistelrooy for Manchester United between 2001-02 and 2003-04.
