Seven years after pulling off, arguably, the most sensational underdog story in the English top-flight football history, Leicester City are demoted to the Championship with the hopes of an instant bounce back.
Now infamous as the most expensive team to be relegated in Premier League history with their huge wage bills, the Foxes will rue a poor 2022-23 season.
Best Player: James Maddison
Maddison had 19 goal contributions in the Premier League (10 goals, nine assists) in 28 appearances and for a team with the strike force of Jamie Vardy, Patson Daka and Kelechi Iheanacho.
He also finished the season with more assists than some of the league’s most creative players in Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Jack Grealish and even Andrew Robertson.
Flop Signing: Harry Souttar
Leicester signed the towering centre-back after his eye-catching defensive displays at Stoke City.
Souttar signed a five-and-a-half-year deal worth $26 million, which made him become Australia’s richest-ever footballer.
He was brought in to solve the Foxes’ defensive problems after they conceded 35 goals in 20 games but an unfortunate injury he sustained limited him to just 12 appearances, and as a result, failed to justify his hefty price tag.
Best result: 4-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur
The match looked set to become just one amongst the many horrendous performances the team had shown in the season after Rodrigo Bentancaur scored a simple tap-in when a pass ricocheted off a Leicester defender into his path from an early corner kick just 14 minutes into the game.
The Foxes then rallied back in spectacular fashion as Senegalese defensive midfielder Nampalys Mendy levelling the scoring with a searing effort, Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho assisted James Maddison before getting a goal of his own and Harvey Barnes completing the scoring on an eventful afternoon.
Worst result: 1-0 loss against Southampton
High-profile losses against Brighton and Tottenham could feature as the worst result of the season but Leicester City were hapless against the Saints even in the face of relegation back in March.
During the game at St Mary’s Stadium, Leicester City failed to register a shot on target despite having 11 shots in total.
The Foxes dominated the play but Carlos Alcaraz’s 35th-minute goal separated both teams.
Top scorer: Harvey Barnes
The Burnley-born forward had his best goal return in a single Premier League season as he scored 13 goals – more than double of what he scored in 2021-22.
Among Barney’s goals was the brace he scored in an eight-goal thriller against Fulham on May 8.
