Lagos Women Run: Over 8000 women register for 2023 edition

Over 8,00 women have registered to participate in the 2023 Lagos Women Run 10km race that will take place on November 11 in Lagos State.

Covener of the annual athletics event, Tayo Popoola explained that the 8000 participants include over 300 professional athletes and local athletes.

Popoola, at a press conference in the Teslim Balogun Stadium, stressed that the eighth edition of Lagos Women Run is focused on women empowerment and support for the girlc child in various skills.

The Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku alongside the technical director of Lagos State Athletics Association, Enefiok Udo-Obong were also present at Thursday’s press briefing which underlines the continued partnership of the Lagos State government with the Lagos Women Run event.

A staggering 1.5 million naira cash prize has been set aside for the overall winner of the 10km race while the veteran category has 500,000 naira earmarked for the winner, an increase 200,000 naira from last year’s prize.

“I want to thank the Lagos State government for increasing the prize money by 50 per cent,” Popoola said.  “This is the eighth edition, and unlike the N1 million prize money for last year’s edition, we are paying the winner of the Open Race N1.5 million, while the prize money for the veteran race is now N500,000, as against the N300,000 in the past.

“Also, the prize money is always for the top 10 in the two categories, but now we are paying the top 20, and we already have over 8,000 runners already registered, with more than 300 professional runners.”

This year’s race will start at the Tafewa Balewa Sqaure and it will terminate at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan.
