Lagos to host 2024 WTT Contender series in June

The World Table Tennis (WTT) has confirmed the 2024 WTT Contender Lagos will take place from June 17 to June 23 in the Southwestern part of Nigeria.

The Nigerian city will host the first of three WTT events scheduled to take place in Africa this year and it will be the second edition of the event in Lagos.

Event Director of the WTT Contender Lagos, Dr. Kweku Tandoh believes Lagos’ impressive hosting of the 2023 edition earned the city another shot to host the best table tennis players in the world.

“We are indeed overwhelmed with the impressive appraisal by the management of WTT, of the maiden edition in 2023. Apart from the WTT team, the players and coaches are eager to return to Lagos following the massive support from the Lagos fans as well as the warm hospitality of Lagosians,” Tandoh said.

“This year, we will improve on what we did in 2023 and hope that we can continue to raise the bar when it comes to hosting major international competitions.

“The players are eager to come back to Lagos and we will welcome them and continue to put Lagos on the world table tennis map.”

Tandoh, who is also the Chief Operating Officer of the African Table Tennis Federation (ATTF), applauded the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for providing the enabling environment for table tennis to thrive and for the state’s unflinching support.

China’s Zhou Qihao won the men’s singles trophy in Lagos last year after a 4-1 victory against Germany’s Dimitrij Ovtcharov.
