Kwibuka T20: Nigeria extend winning streak against Kenya & Botswana

Nigeria Women’s Cricket Team, the Female Yellow Greens made a bright start at the Kwibuka Women’s tournament in Kigali, Rwanda on Sunday.

Coach Leke Oyede’s ladies shoved off the ‘underdogs’ tag against Kenya as they secured victory by four wickets.

Kenya won the toss and chose to bat first. Inspired by captain Queentor Abel’s incredible batting skills, Kenya finished the first innings with 95 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs.

Nigeria, on the other hand, finished with 98 runs for the loss of six wickets in 16.4 overs, thanks to Oseyande Omokhobhio and Lucky Piety partnership that produced a combined 56 runs off 46 balls. 

The second game of the day was against Botswana who won the toss and elected to bat first but the Female Yellow Greens emerged victorious by six wickets. 

Botswana made a good start to the game with Shameelah Mosweu and Laura Mphakedi scoring 26 and 24 runs as they finished the first innings with a total of 96 runs for the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. 

The quintet of Omonye Asika, Lucky Piety, Salome Sunday, Favour Eseigbe and captain Blessing Etim stepped up to power Nigeria to victory by hitting double figures in their runs that led the team to 98 runs for the loss of four wickets in 16.2 overs. 

17-year-old Lucky Piety was named Player of the Match in both games. 

The Female Yellow Greens lead the Kwibuka Women’s T20 with six points and they are followed closely by the best-ranked team in the tournament, Uganda who have four points. Nigeria will hope to make it four wins in four matches when they face Uganda on Monday.
