Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey made the difference as they found the back of the net in Fulham’s shock 2-1 Premier League win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
The Nigerian duo were making their first start for the Cottagers since returning from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations where the Super Eagles reached the final but lost to hosts Ivory Coast.
Fulham looked the better side for much of the first half and continued to put pressure on the Red Devils which finally paid off in the 65th minute when Bassey fired a rebounded shot from a corner kick into the roof of the net.
It was the former Rangers defender’s first goal in Fulham colours.
Man United were able to respond through former captain Harry Maguire but Fulham had the last say deep in added time when Iwobi found enough space to put the ball in the back of the net, leaving goalkeeper Andre Onana as a spectator.
It was the second latest winning goal ever scored against Manchester United in the Premier League, and the latest goal scored by the visiting team at Old Trafford on record since the 2006-07 season.

It was also Iwobi’s third goal of the season for Fulham and his first since he netted a brace against Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nottingham Forest in a 5-0 win in December.
The victory takes Fulham above Bournemouth into 12th place on the Premier League and will host Brighton & Hove Albion at Craven Cottage next Saturday.
