Inter appoint former defender Chivu as new manager

Italian giants Inter Milan have confirmed the arrival of former defender Cristian Chivu as their new manager in a two-year deal until 30 June 2027, Afrosport reports.

Chivu parted ways with Parma on Monday, having replaced Fabio Pecchia in February – his first senior coaching role. He was in charge for only 13 games and helped the team avoid relegation following a hard-fought 3-2 win over Atalanta on the final day of the season.

The 44-year-old spent seven years in the colours of Inter, from 2007 to 2014, winning nine major trophies, including three Serie A titles, one UEFA Champions League, and one FIFA Club World Cup.

He replaces Simone Inzaghi as Inter manager, returning to the Nerazzurri, where he was a youth team coach from the under-14 to under-19 set-up.

Inzaghi departed the San Siro after Inter’s historic 5-0 loss to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League final on 31 May and has since been appointed as manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.

Chivu made 75 appearances for Romania, including being named captain, as well as representing the country at the 2000 and 2008 European Championships.

His first task as Inter boss will be to lead the team to this summer’s Club World Cup, set to take place in the United States from 14 June to 13 July.

The Serie A club are in Group E and will begin their campaign against Mexican club Monterrey on 17 June, before taking on Japan’s Urawa Reds on 21 June and Argentine side River Plate in their final group game on 25 June.
