‘I’m a serial winner’ – Postecoglou confident Tottenham were going to win Europa League

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has described himself as a “serial winner” and was confident of leading his team to Europa League glory, Afrosport reports.

The Australian tactician claimed back in September that he always wins a trophy in his second season.

He, however, came under scrutiny as Spurs had a poor run of form in the Premier League, which currently sees them sit in 17th place on the table.

Postecoglou has now been vindicated with the Europa League triumph over Manchester United on Wednesday, emphasising that winning titles is what he has done throughout his entire managerial career spanning almost three decades.

“I’m pretty… not relaxed, is not the word, because I’d be disappointed if we couldn’t continue on this path. But, like I said, it’s not a criticism,” he said after the victory.

“I understand why it would be difficult for a club like this to buy into one person’s vision. I remember even when I signed the club, even Daniel (Levy), sort of said, “We went after winners, it didn’t work, and now we’ve got Ange.” Mate, I’m a winner.

“I’ve been a serial winner my whole career. It’s what I’ve done more than anything else. I know people talk about my football, which I’m very proud of, but I know people dismiss my achievements because they didn’t happen on this side of the world. But for me, they’re all hard-earned. All I’ve done my whole career is win things.

“I understand, obviously, the way things have gone in the league, people are rightly concerned. I don’t think it’s a true reflection of where we’re at. But whatever happens, my own belief in what I do doesn’t waver, and I’ll continue to push on to do what I do.”

Postecoglou was also asked about his future and clarified that there are no discussions about it with the club hierarchy at the moment.

“No planned meetings, I haven’t had any discussions, no one’s spoken to me about anything. Maybe they felt like they don’t need to, or they were waiting for this game,” he added.

“What I do know is I’m gonna go back to my hotel room, get my family and friends together, open up a nice bottle of scotch, have a couple of quiet ones, get ready for a massive parade on Friday, play Brighton on Sunday really important, our last home game, we want to finish strong and then Monday I’m going on holidays with my beautiful family, because I deserve it. Que sera, sera.”

Tottenham’s Europa League triumph has given them an automatic spot in the league phase of next season’s UEFA Champions League.
