Moroccan coach Hussein Ammouta is a familiar name in African football and his exploits at the 2023 Asian Cup with Jordan bring more spotlight to his managerial sojourn.
Ammouta was appointed Jordan head coach in June 2023 and in six months, he led the Chivalrous to their best result in the Asian Cup history as they defeated South Korea 2-0 in Tuesday’s semi-final for a place in the final.
Jordan are enjoying their best scoring run in the Asian Cup having scored 12 goals so far and they are just a game from lifting their first trophy in a football competition since 1999, when they won the football event at the Arab Games.
They are set to face the winner of the semi-final match between Iran and Qatar in Saturday’s final game at the Lusail Stadium.
Who is Hussein Ammouta?
Ammouta is a former Morocco international who retired from playing in 2003 and he started his coaching career that same year at Zemmouris SC.
The 54-year-old previously coached Moroccan clubs, FUS Rabat and Wydad Casablanca, Qatar’s Al Sadd. He also boasts of experience in international football having competed in the FIFA Club World Cup and he led Morocco’s Atlas Lions Team B for two years before moving to Asia.
How many titles has Ammouta won as a coach?
The Moroccan coach has enjoyed an impressive managerial career filled with trophies starting with the Moroccan Throne Cup and the CAF Confederation Cup with FUS Rabat in 2010.
Two years later, he won the Qatar Stars League with Al Sadd and completed the Emir of Qatar Cup double in 2014 and 2015.
Ammouta returned home to win the Moroccan top-flight title twice with Wydad Casablanca (2016-17) and AS FAR (2022-23), and he led the former to CAF Champions League triumph in 2017.
His first international success was in 2020 when he led Morocco to lift the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN), a year after his appointment.
