How did Newcastle United fare in 2023-24 Premier League season

Newcastle

Newcastle United took many by surprise when they finished in fourth place during the 2022-23 Premier League season and made it to the UEFA Champions League for the first time in two decades.

The 2023-24 season has not been anything like the previous one and Afrosport delves into how things unfolded.

Overall Review

Newcastle

The Magpies were expected to build on from their fantastic fourth place finish from last season but they have been far from that this campaign and are in currently in a three-way battle with Manchester united and Chelsea to secure either Europa League or Europa Conference League qualification next season.

Newcastle have also been dealt a big blow this season with injuries to many players in all departments but despite this setback, they have still managed to remain within the European qualification places and deserve credit for that.

Unsung Hero

Bruno Guimaraes

Guimaraes Newcastle

While Newcastle players have been hit been injuries this season, Bruno Guimaraes has been one of the players that has stayed fit for much of the season.

Indeed, the Brazilian has only missed one game for the Magpies which was due to suspension from accumulation of yellow cards and has played 48 times in all competitions, scoring six goals and providing as many assists.

Without any shadow of doubt, Newcastle’s season not imploding is largely down to Guimaraes’ presence on the pitch and it is not any surprise he has been linked with a transfer to clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Manager

Eddie Howe

Howe Newcastle

The English tactician was brought in November 2021 to replace Steve Bruce when Newcastle were battling with relegation. Howe however steadied the ship and was able to lead them into the Champions League.

Due to the control of Newcastle by the oil-rich Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund (PIF), many thought Howe did not have the credentials to manage the club but the former Bournemouth manager has shown great management skills to keep the dressing room intact even when results have not gone their way.

Such brilliance will convince the PIF to allow Howe continue with the ongoing project.

Possible areas for reinforcement

Wilson Isak Newcastle

Newcastle have prolific forwards in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak. The duo however struggle with injuries and fitness problems, this season not being an exception.

If the Magpies want to remain at the top of their game, they might need another striker that has a strong fitness record and ensure that the goals will continue to flow if Wilson and Isak are not available.
