Ghana’s Ernest Nuamah out for rest of season with ACL injury

Ghana and Lyon forward Ernest Nuamah is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Afrosport reports.

Nuamah, who will miss the rest of the 2024-25 season, sustained the injury during Lyon’s 2-1 comeback win over Lille in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday.

The 21-year-old was replaced by eventual game-winner Rayan Cherki in the seventh minute, two minutes after being on the end of a tackle from defender Gabriel Gudmundsson.

A statement from Lyon on Monday confirmed an ACL rupture in Nuamah’s left knee, adding that the club will support the player and do “everything in its power” to help him make a full recovery.

Nuamah becomes the fourth Ghana international to suffer an ACL injury this season, joining Abdul Fatawu Issahaku (Leicester City), Alidu Seidu (Rennes), and Abdul Mumin (Rayo Vallecano).

The Black Stars forward has scored six goals and provided two assists in 33 matches across all competitions for Lyon this campaign.

His injury comes at a crucial time for the French club, who are set to face Manchester United on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash at the Groupama Stadium.

Lyon’s win against Lille saw them move into fifth in Ligue 1 with 48 points. They host United on Thursday before heading to 10th-placed Auxerre in Ligue 1 on Sunday.
