Galatasaray forward Mauro Icardi is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in their 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, Afrosport reports.
The Argentine, who was eventually stretchered off, sustained the injury while trying to chase down Spurs goalkeeper Fraser Foster. He, however, went down in pain and was replaced by Belgium international Micgy Batshuayi in the 85th minute at RAMS Park.
Galatasaray revealed on Friday that initial tests conducted on the 31-year-old showed an ACL rupture and meniscus damage in his right knee, and he will undergo “pre-operative rehabilitation” before surgery.
A statement on the club website read: “In the MRI examinations performed at our sponsor hospital Medicana, our football player Mauro Icardi, who was injured in the Tottenham match in the fourth week of the UEFA Europa League, was found to have a rupture in the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus damage in his right knee.
“Pre-operative rehabilitation has begun for our player, who is scheduled for surgery.”

Icardi’s season seems to have come to an abrupt end as the recovery time for a ruptured ACL is between six-nine months.
The former Paris St Germain forward joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan in 2022, before making the move permanent in the summer of 2023.
Icardi has been in fine form for the Turkish club this season with six goals and two assists in 14 matches in all competitions to take his tally to 61 goals and 22 appearances in 86 appearances for the for the club.
