Gabonese forward Aubameyang stars as Marseille thump Lyon

Gabon international Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was in inspiring form for Marseille as they saw off Lyon 3-0 in the famous Choc des Olympiques on Wednesday night.

The former Arsenal and Barcelona man scored once and provided two goals as Marseille sealed their third straight Ligue 1 win over Lyon, marking the first time in history such a feat has been achieved.

The game was a rescheduled match of the Ligue 1’s tenth round, initially postponed due to incidents outside the Velodrome involving Marseille ultras attacking the opposing team’s bus.

Aubameyang set up Portuguese forward Vitinha for Les Phoceens first goal of the game in the 21st minute at the Stade Velodrome. After being played through by Amine Harit, Aubameyang cut the ball back for Vitinha, who put the ball into an empty net for his third league goal of the season.

Panamanian right back Michael Murillo got Marseille’s second goal of the game and his first since joining the French side last summer. The 27-year-old nodded to Aubameyang’s inviting cross to become just the second Panama international to score in Ligue 1.

French midfielder Jordan Veretout almost got on the scoresheet after being teed up by Aubameyang once again, but his low strike was saved by Anthony Lopes in the Lyon goal.

Aubameyang capped off his impressive performance with a goal of his own ten minutes into the second half. The 34-year-old buried Vitinha’s cutback into the bottom corner, leaving Lopes helpless and rooted to a spot.

The result helped Gennaro Gattuso’s side continue their surge up the table, as they are now just two points behind Lens in sixth place, while Lyon now find themselves five points adrift of the second-to-last Lorient.
