Last season’s FA Cup dark horses, Coventry City, are close to appointing former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard as new head coach, Afrosport reports.
Lampard is expected to succeed Mark Robins after the 54-year-old, who spent almost eight years in charge of the Sky Blues, was sacked earlier this month following a series of bad results.
Robins, who was the third-longest serving manager in English football, was relieved of his role at Coventry after they were beaten 2-1 at home by Derby County on November 6, leaving them 17th in the Championship standings.
He also led Coventry from League Two to the Championship and was seconds away from guiding them to the FA Cup final last season, where they lost to Manchester United on penalties, as well as the 2022/23 play-off final, where they were close to gaining promotion to the Premier League.
Lampard, however, is reportedly close to joining the Sky Blues, as the two parties have reached an agreement in principle, with little detail of the deal being ironed out.
Coventry will be Lampard’s fourth permanent coaching job, following stints at Derby, Chelsea, and Everton, where he was sacked in January 2023 and replaced by Sean Dyche.
Lampard will definitely have his work cut out for him as the Sky Blues, who are without a win in four games, remain 17th with 17 points after 17 matches in the Championship.
