FIFACWC: Man City’s Lewis handed extra two-game ban for red card

Rico Lewis will be unavailable for Manchester City’s next two matches at the Club World Cup after his suspension was extended to three games, Afrosport reports.

The defender was initially handed a one-match ban following his red card in the 2-0 win over Wydad AC in their opening group game. He missed City’s 6-0 victory against Al Ain in Atlanta, which counted as the first game of his suspension.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee, however, deemed the incident warranted a longer suspension under their regulations, citing a breach of conduct that falls under serious foul play.

The extended ban means he will now also be sidelined for City’s final group stage clash against Juventus on Thursday in Orlando, as well as their upcoming last-16 fixture.

City currently sit second in Group G with six points, the same as leaders Juventus, and will play the Old Lady next in a battle for top spot at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
