F1: Norris backs Hamilton decision to join Ferrari

Abu Dhabi GP: Hamilton ends Mercedes F1 stint fourth as Norris win hands McLaren constructors’ title

Lando Norris has backed the decision of Lewis Hamilton to leave Mercedes for Ferrari, admitting he would have done the same if he was in a similar position, Afrosport reports.

Hamilton stunned the paddock when Ferrari announced they had signed him for 2025 on the eve of last season.

It has been a major headline ever since as the move is now official with the seven-time champion getting some mileage in old Ferrari machinery before pre-season testing commences.

“It’s a cool story for him to go to Ferrari after everything he’s achieved,” Norris said.

“It’s a cool step. A lot of people said it’s probably not the right thing to do and so forth.

“I would probably do the same if I was in his position. It looks cool. It’s an amazing story for him.

“I know he’s going to want to go there with a fresh mindset and show everyone that he’s still got the Lewis Hamilton he showed for many, many years prior. We will wait and see.”

Meanwhile, Norris says he has nothing to prove to Max Verstappen after failing to deny the Red Bull driver a fourth successive championship title last season.

“I don’t need to go out and prove anything to him. I don’t need to take unnecessary risk and go down trying. I don’t think you have to do anything special to beat Max,” the McLaren driver stated.

“He’s quick, aggressive and one of the best ever, but the easiest way is just being a bit quicker and staying ahead. You just have to be smart and that’s the answer to it all, and think of the long game sometimes.

“There are things I definitely need to tighten up but the main thing that’s going to change this year is we need more points at the beginning and that will change the fight ahead.”.

Norris will hope for a better start with reigning constructor champions McLaren when the 2025 season commences with the Australian Grand Prix on March 16.
