F1: Hamilton makes damning self assessment after poor Hungarian GP qualifying

Lewis Hamilton called himself “useless” and suggested Ferrari need another driver after he qualified 12th for the Hungarian Grand Prix while teammate Charles Leclerc took pole position in Saturday’s session, Afrosport reports.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion is the most successful driver at the Hungaroring with nine pole positions and eight race wins, making Saturday his worst performance at the circuit.

Hamilton joined Ferrari from Mercedes in January but is yet to stand on the podium after 13 races, with his pole and sprint race win at the Chinese Grand Prix in March his best result.

“It’s me every time. I’m useless, absolutely useless,” the 40-year-old told Sky Sports F1.

“The team have no problem. You’ve seen the car’s on pole, so we probably need to change driver.”

Hamilton has not won a grand prix in more than a year and is on a podium drought, now stretching at 15 races, the longest of his illustrious F1 career.

He is currently sixth in the drivers’ championship, 30 points and one place behind Leclerc. He has only beaten the Monegasque twice on race day and is behind him 4-10 in qualifying.
