Super Eagles assistant coaches Finidi George and Ike Shorunmu have been relieved of their duties less than a week to Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Guinea-Bissau.
Afrosport can reveal that the former Nigeria internationals were informed by a top NFF official not to report to the national team camp that opens in Abuja on Monday.
Enyimba coach Finidi George and Shorunmu were appointed at the same time in April 2022, to be a part of Jose Peseiro’s coaching crew but they were not offered working contracts.
They were on the bench for the Super Eagles’ matches against Sierra Leone, Sao Tome and Principe, Algeria, Costa Rica and Portugal last year.
Our sources further revealed that Portuguese coach Peseiro prefers to work with U23 goalkeeper coach and ex-Wikki Tourist & Enyimba coach Usman Abd’Allah in a rotational capacity.
Shorunmu, who played for Nigeria at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan, previously coached the national team on two occasions in 2005 and 2011, while George played at two FIFA World Cups in 1994 and 1998.
The Super Eagles face Guinea-Bissau at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday before traveling to Bissau for the return fixture three days later.
