Euro 2024: Bellingham devastated by ‘cruel’ England final defeat

Nico Williams has appreciated the impact of his parents after Spain won the Euro 2024 championship on Sunday.

The 22-year-old is the child of Ghanaian parents who travelled through treacherous conditions across the Sahara before reaching the shores of Spain and settled in the Basque region where Nico and his brother Inaki were born.

Williams scored in Sunday’s final and won the his second Man of the Match award in the tournament, and believes players with migrant backgrounds are changing the landscape in the game.

“I believe there is a historical change. We are really grateful. My parents suffered to get here. They are the ones who have suffered the most and they have instilled this sort of respect and loyalty in me,” he said.

“At the end of the day, I think footballers have a lot of impact in society. So I’m really happy because we are making history and there is no much to say.”

Nico Williams scored two goals and provided one assist during the Euro 2024 tournament. He has been capped 20 times for Spain, scoring four goals and providing six assists.
