Euro 2024: Bellingham stunner saves England from last 16 exit

A stunning 95th minute equaliser by Jude Bellingham inspired  England to a comeback 2-1 win against Slovakia after extra-time in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Ivan Schranz’s 25th minute goal had put Slovakia ahead at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, but with less than 90 seconds left on the clock, a superb Bellingham bicycle kick from a throw-in, took the game into extra-time.

Captain, Harry Kane then headed home Ivan Toney’s flick, just 50 seconds into the first half of extra-time, to give England a victory which sets up a quarter-final with Switzerland next Saturday.

At full time, coach Gareth Southgate, who has been largely criticised by fans and pundits, said his players showed character and also acknowledged that their next opponent are a very good side.

“We’ll have to assess everybody now. It’s a good team we’re going to play against Switzerland but we’ve got time and the lift everybody will get emotionally is huge,” he stated.

“They’ve shown the character they have. We know nights like tonight have everybody on the edge of the sofa.”

England, who got to the final of the Euros in 2020, are chasing their first major honours since winning the FIFA World Cup in 1966.
