Double blow for Barcelona as two starters ruled out with injuries

Barcelona have suffered a double injury blow as Joan Garcia and Raphinha will be sidelined for an extended period, Afrosport reports.

The Spanish champions on Friday confirmed that Garcia has suffered “a tear of the internal meniscus in his left knee,” which requires surgery and will keep the goalkeeper out for about four to six weeks.

A statement from the club said: “Player Joan Garcia has suffered a tear of the internal meniscus in his left knee. Tomorrow, he will undergo arthroscopic surgery performed by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau. The estimated recovery time is between 4 and 6 weeks, depending on his progress.”

Raphinha, meanwhile, has picked up a hamstring injury, ruling the Brazilian out for three weeks.

“Player Raphinha has an injury to the middle third of the femoral biceps in his right thigh,” the club said, “The estimated recovery time is around 3 weeks.”

Injuries to both players deal a big blow to Barcelona, with Gavi ruled out for five months after undergoing knee surgery, while Fermin Lopez will also miss three weeks due to a muscle problem.

Both Garcia and Raphinha will miss Sunday’s league game against Real Sociedad as well as their Champions League clash against Paris Saint-Germain next Tuesday.

Garcia, meanwhile, will be out for longer and will miss their trip to Santiago Bernabeu to face Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the season.

With the 24-year-old sidelined, Wojciech Szczesny is expected to start in goal, while youngster Eder Aller is expected to be his back-up.
