Done Deal: Nigeria’s Torunarigha joins Hamburg on free transfer from Gent

Super Eagles defender Jordan Torunarigha has completed a move to Bundesliga club Hamburg on a free transfer, Afrosport reports.

Torunarigha departs Belgian Pro League side Gent following the expiration of his contract and returns to Germany, his birth country.

The 27-year-old defender was formerly on the books of Hertha Berlin, having graduated through the club’s youth system. He made his senior debut in February 2017, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 81 appearances for the club across five years.

“I know the Bundesliga and I am very happy to be returning and playing in this special league again – especially with a club steeped in tradition like HSV,” Torunarigha said.

“The management made a great effort for me and gave me a great feeling. I can hardly wait to get to know my teammates, the coaching staff, the staff, the fans, and the city, and to use all my strengths and experience to help us have a successful season together and achieve our goals.”

The Nigeria international moves to the Volksparkstadion after a three-and-a-half-year spell with Gent, where he made 145 appearances, scoring four goals and providing six assists, as well as winning the Belgian Cup in 2021-22.

Hamburg, meanwhile, returned to the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence, securing promotion following a 6-1 thrashing of Ulm on 10 May.

They, however, finished second in the German second division with 59 points, two behind champions Cologne, after losing 3-2 away at Greuther Furth on the final day of the season.
