Done Deal: Crystal Palace sign Brennan Johnson in club-record deal from Tottenham

Crystal Palace have completed the signing of Brennan Johnson from Tottenham in a club-record deal worth £35 million, the club announced on Friday.

The two clubs agreed on the fee earlier in the week, but the winger delayed a final decision as he considered his options. Bournemouth were also monitoring the situation as they look to replace Manchester City target Antoine Semenyo.

Johnson eventually opted for a move to Selhurst Park after reportedly holding talks with Palace head coach Oliver Glasner. The Austrian is eager to strengthen his squad as Palace juggle domestic and European commitments for the first time.

The Wales international began his medical on Thursday, with the club announcing the deal a day later. His signing surpasses the £27m the Eagles paid to sign Belgian striker Christian Benteke from Liverpool in 2016.

“I’m really excited and I’m really happy,” Johnson said. “Crystal Palace are such a great club, one that I’ve always admired.

“It’s a great time for me to be here and join the journey that this club is on – I’m super excited.”

The 24-year-old has struggled for regular starts at Tottenham this season, starting just six league matches amid increased competition for places in attack. He has netted just four goals in 22 appearances in all competitions.

Despite limited minutes this term, Johnson enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, finishing as Spurs’ top scorer with 18 goals in all competitions. He also scored the winning goal in the Europa League final against Manchester United, ending the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

Johnson will wear the number 11 shirt at Palace and his arrival is expected to add depth as the Eagles push for a strong second half of the season.

The forward is set to make Palace’s matchday squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle. The Eagles sit 10th on the and are winless in their last six contest across all competitions.
