Dia strike not enough to hand Salernitana victory

Senegal striker Dia makes African history in Serie A

Boulaye Dia found the back of the net as Salernitana played out a 1-1 draw with AS Roma in Monday night’s Serie A action.

The Garnets have been in good form, suffering one defeat in the last 12 games (W3 D8) and went ahead in the 12th minute against the Giallorossi thanks to veteran midfielder Antonio Candreva.

Roma had a goal by Roger Ibanez disallowed by VAR in added time of the first half but got their equaliser just two minutes after the restart through Italian-Egyptian forward Stephan El Shaarawy. It did not take too long for Salernitana to respond as Dia did a backheel for his 16th league goal of the season.

Salernitana’s hopes of recording back-to-back league victories for the first time since October were dashed when former Chelsea and Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic made it 2-2 with seven minutes left to the end of regulation time.

The game ended with Salernitana coach Paulo Sosa receiving a red card in injury time. The result leaves the Campania outfit in 15th place on the able, nine points clear of the relegation zone with two games left to play.

Roma meanwhile sit in sixth place, four points shy of the top four.
