Deadline Day: Mason Greenwood joins Getafe on loan from Manchester United

Manchester United have announced that Mason Greenwood has joined Spanish La Liga side Getafe on loan.

The 21-year-old has been frozen out of the Red Devils first team since January 2022 when he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

The charges were however dropped against Greenwood but United still carried on with an internal investigation. After months of waiting for a decision by the club, it was finally announced that Greenwood’s career was better served away from Old Trafford.

There was no clarity on whether it meant a loan or permanent transfer but the latter was seemingly the favoured option with a statement on United’s website that read:

“Mason Greenwood has signed for La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan, subject to international clearance.

“The move enables Greenwood to begin to rebuild his career away from Manchester United.

“The club will continue to offer its support to Mason and his family during this period of transition.”

Greenwood’s departure marked a busy day on transfer deadline day at Old Trafford that saw the arrival of Sergio Reguilon and Morocco midfielder Sofyan Amrabat both on loan from Tottenham Hotspur and Fiorentina respectively while goalkeeper Altay Bayindir joined from Turkish giants Fenerbahce as a replacement for Dean Henderson who joined Crystal Palace in a permanent transfer.

Deadline day saw the departures of Alvaro Fernandez and Charlie McNeill both on loan to Granada and Stevenage respectively while Marc Jurado and Logan Pye moved to Espanyol and Burnley respectively in permanent transfers.
