Club World Cup: African champions Al Ahly suffer semi-final defeat to Fluminense

Reigning CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly failed to reach their maiden FIFA Club World Cup final after suffering a 2-0 loss to Copa Libertadores champions Fluminense on Monday night.

The Egyptian giants defeated Al-Ittihad in the quarter-finals to reach their sixth semi-final.

They managed to hold Fluminense at bay for more than an hour but the floodgates at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah finally opened in the 71st minute when Jhon Arias scored from the penalty spot after South African forward Percy Tau brought down former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo in the box.

Substitute John Kennedy put the game beyond doubt with the second goal in the 90th minute off an assist by Matheus Martinelli.

Fluminense have now proceeded to their first-ever Club World Cup final in their maiden tournament outing and will face the winner of Tuesday’s other semifinal between Manchester City and Urawa Red Diamonds.

Al Ahly meanwhile will be targeting a fourth bronze medal in the third/fourth place playoff.
