Chelsea starlet Josh Acheampong agrees to sign new five-year contract

Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong will sign a new five-year deal at Stamford Bridge after talks stalled previously, Afrosport reports.

The right back’s representative and the club are now in the final stages of the deal as paperworks are now being prepared as confirmed by the club on Wednesday.

Chelsea had always viewed Acheampong as a young prospect for the future especially with skipper Reece James’s disappointing injury history.

Acheampong had previously declined contract renewal offers from the club which prompted the club to take actions against him as he was freezed from training and playing with the first team and youth team.

The new deal automatically gives the 18-year-old liberty to now play and train with the first team.

However, with just 18 months left in his current deal, the club has made sure to convince the teenager to sign a new contract to avoid him running down the current one and turn to a free agent.

When asked about the youngster last week, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca told BBC Sport: “The club loves Josh – I love Josh.”

There is a high possibilty that Acheampong would start on Thursday when Chelsea host Shamrock Rovers on Thursday in the UEFA Conference League.

He could also get some decent minutes on the Premier League especially with defenders Wesley Fofana and Reece James unavailability due to injury.
