Chelsea star Aubameyang makes Gabon U-turn after meeting president

2015 African Footballer of the Year Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has rescinded his decision to retire from international duty with Gabon.

Exactly a year ago, Aubameyang brought an end to his 13-year stint with the national team that started at the age of 19 with 30 goals scored in 72 matches.

Things took a new turn on Tuesday with the former Arsenal and Barcelona star meeting Gabon president Ali Bongo and he announced his return to Patrice Neveu’s selection with immediate effect.

The Panthers of Gabon sit atop of Group I of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with seven points after four matches, above second-placed Sudan, Mauritania and DR Congo.

“A few days ago, I had the immense honour of being received by the President of the Republic of Gabon, my country, President Ali Bongo and at the same time to be able to listen to the wise words he transmitted to me like a father talking to his son,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Following this, I therefore put myself at the disposal of my country and of coach Patrice Neveu with whom of course we exchanged. Panther once, panther always.”
