Chelsea captain Reece James rues missed opportunity for victory at Brentford

Chelsea captain Reece James rued his team’s missed opportunity in taking maximum points away at Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday, Afrosport reports.

The Blues were five minutes away from a comeback 2-1 win after Moises Caicedo scored in the 85th minute following Cole Palmer’s 61st minute equaliser. Their hopes of picking up three points were however dashed when Fabio Carvalho equalised in added time, with the game ultimately ending 2-2.

Reacting to the result, James, who came on for Wesley Fofana in the second half, stated the club need to accept the result and move on.

“It’s disappointing not to win,” he said. “We came here to win and we found ourselves a goal down, and we adapted the way we played and got ourselves back into the game. They are a strong team, and they punished us.

“We’re not happy with drawing, but we’ll keep fighting. We’ll have to accept the result and move forward.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, called for better improvement in avoiding such disappointment.

“For sure in the moment that we scored the second goal we have to manage better,” the Italian stated.

“We scored in the 86th minute and in that moment you need to give passes, you need to slow down, you need to send the game to sleep a little bit. It’s something that we didn’t do and it’s something that we need to improve on and we need to learn.”

Chelsea still remain unbeaten after four Premier League games (W2 D2), with all their fixtures against London teams (Crystal Palace 0-0, West Ham 5-1 and Fulham 2-0).

Their next fixture is away at Bayern Munich in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
