CHAN 2024: Nigeria crash out of tournament after heavy loss to Sudan

Nigeria have crashed out of the 2024 African Nations Championship following their heavy 4-0 loss to Sudan in Zanzibar on Tuesday, Afrosport reports.

The Super Eagles lost 1-0 to reigning CHAN champions Senegal in their Group D opener and were in for another difficult evening against the Sudanese.

Anthony Ijoma thought he had given Nigeria the lead in the 22nd minute but it was ruled out for offside by VAR.

That opportunity proved to be costly as Remo Stars defender Leonard Ngenge put the ball into his own net three minutes later.

There were more defensive struggles from Eric Chelle’s side as Sudan were awarded a penalty in the 44th minute which was converted by Walieldin Khidir.

The Falcons of Jediane were still in the mood for more goals in the second half and added two more thanks to Abdelrazig Omer’s brace in the 55th and 62nd minute.

The defeat sees Nigeria remain bottom of Group D and will now play for pride in their final game against the Republic of Congo who played out a 1-1 draw with Senegal in the earlier match on Tuesday.

Sudan are top of the group, tied on four four points with Senegal but with a superior goal difference ahead of their clash that will determine who takes pole position.
