CAFCL: TP Mazembe, Young Africans record massive wins over North African opponents

TP Mazembe and Young Africans recorded big wins in round five of the CAF Champions League group stage after defeating North African sides Pyramids FC and Belouizdad 3-0 and 4-0 respectively in groups A and D on Saturday.

The DR Congo giants began with Joel Beya and Glody Likonza establishing a 2-0 first half lead before Patient Mwamba sealed the deal in added time.

For Young Africans, Mudathir Yahya opened proceedings towards the half time break before the Tanzanian heavyweights came out all guns blazing in the second half with goals from Burkinabe Stephane Aziz Ki, Zambian Kennedy Musonda and Ivorian Joseph Guede Gnadou.

The victory sees Mazembe through to the quarter-finals along with Memelodi Sundowns who won 2-0 away at Mauritanian side Nouadhibou.

Young Africans are also guaranteed of their place in the last eight with their 4-3 aggregate win over Belouizdad which will be enough to see them go through on the head to head record even if they lose their final group game against reigning champions Al Ahly who are also through to the next round after their 1-0 win away win at Medeama of Ghana away from home on Friday.

In other results on Saturday, Wydad Casablanca defeated Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana 1-0 in Group B, moving level on points with Simba SC of Tanzania who held guaranteed table toppers ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan on Friday.

In the all-Tunisian Group D affair, Esperance came out on top with a 2-0 win over rivals Etoile du Sahel, Brazilian Yan Sasee and Zakaria El Ayeb getting the goals.

Esperance’s place in the quarter-finals is not guaranteed yet as they will have to face Al-Hilal Omdurman in their final group.

The Sudanese giants played out a goalless draw with already-qualified Petro Atletico de Luanda of Angola on Friday.
