CAFCL Final: 3 key battles to look out for in the second leg

The second leg of the CAF Champions League final takes place at Stade Mohamed V between Wydad Casablanca and Al Ahly on Sunday night.

The Red Devils hold a 2-1 lead from the first leg but the Red Castle will be looking to use their away goals and home advantage to turn the tide around.

Afrosport previews three key battles from what should be a very thrilling game in Morocco.

Percy Tau vs Yahia Attiyat Allah

Tau scored the first goal in the first leg in Cairo and aside the goal had a good game, producing a total of four shots, two successful long balls out of four, one key pass and 33 accurate touches (84.6%).

Considering Wydad are on the back foot heading into this second leg, Tau will need to be wary of left-back Attiyat Allah. The Moroccan had a good game in the first game, making two clearances, one interception and tackle and was not dribbled past. He was also good in attack, making two key passes and 100% cross accuracy (two in two). He also produced two shots, one of them hitting the woodwork.

Tau has five goals and as many assists in the Champions League this season, hence Attiyat Allah will need to be on extra guard against the former Brighton & Hove Albion player’s threat.

Kahraba vs Arsene Zola

Kahraba netted the second goal for Al Ahly and will be looking to inspire them with a result that hands the Egyptians the Champions League for the 11th time.

He produced four shots, all of them on target. That is a sign of the Egyptian’s proficiency in front of goal. Alk taking into account Kahraba has six goals in the Champions League this season, the joint highest alongside Peter Shalulile of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Trying to stop Kahraba’s threat is DR Congo centre-back Zola. He made made three clearances and one interception in the first leg while winning one ground and aerial duel from two attempts each and was never dribbled past in the game.

Over the course of this season’s Champions League, Zola has aided Wydad in keeping six of seven clean sheets, the joint highest of any team along with Al Ahly. He has made no errors leading to a  shot, goal or caused any penalties. These are all signs of a top defender.

Aymane El Hassouni vs Marwan Attia

Wydad will be looking to force a way back into this tie with inspiration from their number 10 El Hassouni. The 28-year-old Moroccan had a 100% passing accuracy in the first leg (19 of 19) likewise one successful long ball from one attempt. He was also able to successfully attempt four of six dribbles.

Clearly El Hassouni will try to come alive at the Stade Mohamed V on Sunday night but trying to stall his progress will be Al Ahly defensive midfielder Attia. The 24-year-old Egyptian was very active on the first leg, producing 48 accurate passes (84.2%), 68 touches on the ball and won seven of 11 total duels. In nine Champions League appearances this season, he has averaged 1.8 interceptions and 2.6 clearances.

Attia will be on guard once again to ensure he gets his team over the line to be crowned champions.
