Brighton youth coach Mwepu hospitalised in Zambia

Former Zambian international Enock Mwepu is to be undergoing “precautionary checks” in hospital after feeling unwell on Sunday.

The 25-year-old was rushed to the hospital on the outskirts of the Zambian capital city, Lusaka.

In October 2022, Mwepu was sadly forced to retire from professional football due to a hereditary heart condition, as a precaution against a potential severe cardiac arrest in the future.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder was diagnosed with the condition after he fell ill while on a flight to join up with the Zambian national team.

As a result, in December 2022, the Premier League club appointed Mwepu to the role of the under-9s coach in their academy and they have given an update on his health status.

“The club can provide the following update on Enock Mwepu, in response to media reports: Enock was taken ill in Zambia and is currently undergoing precautionary checks,” the statement read.

“Our medical team is in communication with the hospital to assist if required. The club would like to thank the many well-wishers for their messages and support. Neither the club nor Enock wish to provide any further comment at this stage.”

Mwepu joined the Seagulls on a four-year contract from Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg in July 2021.

The midfielder’s time at the club was marred by injuries, but he was lively anytime he played, including memorable performances against Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal, finishing with two goals and assist across both games.
