Man Utd sack Dutch manager Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have sacked manager Erik ten Hag, ending his two and a half-year stay at the club, Afrosport reports.

The former Ajax manager was reportedly informed of the decision by the club’s hierarchy on Monday morning, following the club’s defeat to West Ham United at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 by the Hammers after a controversial penalty decision as Jarrod Bowen converted the spot-kick that resulted in the winning goal.

United’s board, however, has appointed former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who joined Ten Hag’s coaching team as an assistant last summer, as interim manager.

A statement on the club website read: “We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

“Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.”

Ten Hag was appointed by United in April 2022 after a successful career in charge at Ajax. In his first season at Old Trafford, he led United to a third-place finish in the Premier League as well as winning the Carabao Cup.

His second season at the club was much worse, as they finished eighth in the league, their worst ever finish in the Premier League era. He, however, led them to the triumph in the FA Cup, where they defeated rivals Manchester City in the final.

United are left languishing in 14th in the Premier League with just three wins from their opening nine matches, while they occupy the 21st spot in the Europa League table.
