Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal is set for a spell on the sidelines as the Spain international has suffered an ankle injury, which will rule him out for the rest of the year, the club confirmed on Monday.
Yamal was forced off during Barcelona’s 1-0 home defeat to Leganes in La Liga on Sunday and was replaced by fellow countryman Gavi in the 75th minute at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.
A statement from the club confirmed that the 17-year-old has injured his right ankle, and initial tests revealed that he has suffered a grade 1 injury to his ankle ligament, which will keep him out for at least three weeks.
“The first team player, Lamine Yamal, received a blow to the right ankle during the game against CD Leganés on Sunday. Tests carried out on Monday have revealed that the player has a grade 1 injury to a ligament in the ankle. The player is expected to be out for 3 to 4 weeks,” the La Liga leaders wrote.
Yamal also sustained an ankle injury last month, missing three matches for Barcelona, including a 3-0 win against Brest in the UEFA Champions League as well as a 2-2 draw at Celta Vigo.

The Barcelona No. 19 has been in good form this season for the Catalan giants, scoring six goals and providing 12 assists in 21 appearances in all competitions, including five goals and a league-leading 10 assists in La Liga.
Yamal, however, will not play in Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash against Atletico Madrid, who are in second place in the league standings, level on points (38) with Barcelona, and are breathing down the neck of the leaders.
