Barcelona have announced that talismanic teenager Lamine Yamal will wear the iconic number 10 shirt ahead of the 2025-26 season, Afrosport reports.

Barcelona revealed the news of Yamal’s new shirt number at an event held on Wednesday to celebrate his new contract, which runs until 2031, with his family and friends in attendance.

Yamal, who turned 18 on Sunday, will don the number previously worn by eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi. Meanwhile, Ansu Fati, who recently secured a loan move to French club Monaco, last wore the No. 10 shirt at the Catalan club.

Messi got the No. 10 shirt at Barcelona in 2008, wearing it until he secured a move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. A legend at the club, the La Masia graduate, who is also Barcelona’s all-time leading scorer, departed the club after winning 34 trophies, including 10 La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.

Speaking at the event, Yamal said: “When I was a child, my dream was to debut for Barca, to grow up and play with the No. 10. Every kid born in Barcelona dreams of that. Messi has made his way, and I’m going to make mine.”

Since making his first team debut in April 2023, Yamal has been one of the standout performers at the club, having scored 25 goals and provided 34 assists in 106 appearances across all competitions.

He has won four trophies at the club, including one La Liga title and one Copa del Rey. He also helped Spain win the 2024 European Championship as well as get to the final of the 2024 UEFA Nations League.

“This is the beginning of a journey that I hope will be very long and full of victories. I haven’t won the Champions League and the World Cup,” he said. “These are my goals now.”

“To keep growing, because I’m still very young, but above all to keep winning … I’ll give everything to make the fans happy … This is my lifetime club and the best in the world.”

The left-footed forward gets his fourth number with Barcelona: he wore the No. 41 shirt on his debut in the 2022-23 campaign, was handed No. 27 the following season, and donned the No. 19 jersey last term—the same number Messi wore before being passed the No. 10.

Aside from Messi, several other football legends have won the shirt at Barcelona, including Maradona, Romario, Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho.
