BAL: FIBA suspend Burundi for Dynamo’s withdrawal from Kalahari Conference

2024 Basketball Africa League: All there is to know about BAL’s fourth season

The world basketball governing body, FIBA has sanctioned the Burundian Basketball Federation (FEBABU) with an indefinite suspension for backing Dynamo’s withdrawal from the 2024 Basketball Africa League.

Dynamo forfeited all their matches in the Kalahari Conference in March. As a result, they were disqualified from the tournament after refusing to wear jerseys that had the ‘Visit Rwanda’ logo.

The Burundian champions protested against wearing the sponsored jersey due to ongoing political tensions between Burundi and Rwanda which has led to the former closing its borders against its neighbours.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA), in a statement, ruled that the FEBABU’s actions constitute a violation of the applicable provisions of the general statutes of FIBA.

However, the Burundian Basketball Federation has been mandated to defend itself against further sanctions before Tuesday, April 23.

Morocco’s FUS Rabat won the BAL 2024 Kalahari Conference and the Nile Conference will begin from April 19 in the Egyptian city of Cairo.
