Babangida: Ex-Nigeria star set for surgery, loses son after accident

Former Super Eagles winger Tijani Babangida is set to go under the knife for a knee operation aftermath a ghastly car accident along the Kaduna-Zaria road on Thursday.

Babangida was plying the highway in northern Nigeria with his family when the unfortunate crash happened.

His brother, Ibrahim was confirmed dead on the spot while the former Ajax star and his spouse were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Daily Trust reported on Sunday that Babangida’s one-year-old son has passed on due to injuries from the accident while his wife has suffered partial sight loss due to facial injuries.

The 50-year-old who is the President of the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), has a damaged knee and it will be operated on in the country’s capital city, Abuja.

The other victims of the accident include Babangida’s maid who fractured a leg and a passerby who was hit by the car.

Babangida was a member of the Dream Team that secured Nigeria’s gold medal in the men’s football event at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics.

He played at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and he made appearances at the 2000 and 2002 Africa Cup of Nations.

The won the Dutch Eredivisie title with Ajax in 1997-98 and the Turkish Cup with Genclerbirligi in 2001.
