Awaziem on target in Hajduk Split win

Chidozie Awaziem was among the goalscorers as Hajduk Split recorded a 3-0 win over Osijek in the Croatian Football League on Saturday.

The Whites won by the same scoreline of their previous game against Lokomotiva after two consecutive goalless draw against Gorica and Dinamo Zagreb.

Awaziem got things off at Stadion Poljud in the 25th minute after a loose ball from a corner kick fell to his path and fired in a volley from close range.

The Super Eagles defender, who is on loan from Portuguese club Boavista, has scored five league goal in the Croatian top-flight this season and it was his first goal since October 26 in a 3-1 win over Gorica.

Dario Melnjak and Jan Mlakar were the other goalscorers of the day to give Hajduk their third win in their last five league games.

They have kept clean sheets in all those five games with Awaziem completing 90 minutes in all of them. The former FC Porto defender has featured 26 times in the league for Hajduk this season and 33 times in all competitions.

The six-time league champions have the option to buy Awaziem permanently from Boavista at the end of his loan spell.

Reacting after the game, Awaziem said: “I am very happy about the victory, even more so because we kept a clean sheet once again.

“This is very important for the team. It was not an easy match, but we have our goal, that is to win the Cup and it is very important to keep the mentality and focus.”

On scoring his fifth goal of the season, he stated: “I just want to help the club and the team achieve their goals, but of course I’m happy about the goal.”

Hajduk currently sit second in the league standings, seven points behind leaders Dinamo Zagreb, and have two more games against Slaven and Sibenik before taking on the latter in the Croatian Cup final on May 24.
