Angola: 47 years of basketball and still dominating Africa

The Angolan Basketball team has seen it all at the peak of national basketball championships.

After losing their first official match against Nigeria under legendary coach Victorino Cunha on 1 February 1976, they went on to compete in several competitions, including four Summer Olympics between 1992 and 2004.

Their international appearances continue with three World Championships in 2002, 2006 and 2010, the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup and the FIBA Africa Championship where they have made a sweep of 11 out of the last 16 championships.

Angola also won the basketball event at the All-Africa Games thrice, in 1987, 2003 and 2007.

At the 2006 FIBA World Championships held in Japan, Angola competed against Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Panama and Spain and they managed to secure three wins in the tournament. They finished 10th overall in the 2006 edition after France defeated them in the knockout phase.

They finished as one of the top five teams and as an African champion at the next World Championships in Spain in 2014.

Angola currently ranks 23rd in the world, making them the top team in FIBA Africa.
