Algeria to use VAR in Ligue 1 next season

The Algeria Football Federation (FAF) has confirmed introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology for the 2023-24 Ligue 1 season.

The president of the Algerian FA, Djahid Zefizef said a joint commission has been set up to inspect stadiums of the top-flight clubs ahead of the introduction of the technology.

Meanwhile, the FAF are also working towards using the VAR for their semi-finals and final match of the 2023 Algerian Cup.

“Refereeing errors have always existed, especially as the end of each season approaches. There must be fairness and transparency, we are working in this direction,” Zefizef said.

“I would like to point out that no club is targeted or is the subject of a conspiracy. At the BF meeting held on Sunday, we set up a joint commission whose mission will be to inspect the stadiums, as part of the introduction of VAR from next season.”

CR Belouizda, despite two games less, currently lead the Algerian Ligue 1 standings with five points above second-placed CS Constantine.

VAR is currently in use in the Egyptian Premier League with support from Spanish technology, Mediapro while South Africa is another African country that is considering the introduction of VAR in its domestic football competitions with former FIFA referee, Victor Gomes appointed as chairman of SAFA Referees Committee.
