AFCON 2025: Super Eagles outclass Algeria to reach semi-finals

Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following their commanding 2-0 win over Algeria in Saturday’s quarter-final in Marrakesh, Afrosport reports.

The Desert Foxes had to dig deep to defeat DR Congo 1-0 after extra time in the round of 16, while the Super Eagles thumped Mozambique 4-0.

The West Africans started the brighter of the two sides at Stade Marrakesh, with 2023 African Player of the Year Victor Osimhen making some good runs into the box while 2024 recipient Ademola Lookman fired a shot that Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane saved in the 22nd minute.

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey was then close to giving Nigeria the lead, but his effort was hacked off the line by an Algerian defender.

Eric Chelle’s men continued to charge forward, which required the Foxes’ defence to remain constantly alert to clear every threat that came their way.

Sevilla forward Akor Adams had a glorious chance in the 36th minute after he was nicely set up by Alex Iowbi but fired it over the bar.

The Super Eagles continued with the intensity in the second half and finally got the lead in the 47th minute when Bruno Onyemaechi’s cross was headed in by Osimhen.

The Galatasaray superstar turned provider for the second goal 10 minutes later when he found Adams, who was one-on-one with Zidane and lobbed the ball over him for his second goal of the tournament.

Adams was close to scoring his second of the evening in the 81st minute, but his header hit the woodwork.

The three-time AFCON winners were able to see out the game and will now face tournament hosts Morocco for a place in the final.
