AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Ghana held by Sudan as Algeria run riot against Togo

The Black Stars of Ghana continued their winless streak in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches as they were held to a goalless draw by Sudan at the Accra Sports Stadium on Thursday.

Despite despite dominating for a large part of the game, the coach Otto Addo-led side were unable to find the back of the net.

Ghana defender Alexander Djiku came close to scoring in the fourth minute after a well-placed corner from Mohammed Kudus. Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed Mustafa also made a remarkable save in the 88th minute, denying Kudus a goal to keep the game level at full time .

The Black Stars with just two points from three matches remain third in Group F, and they will strive for a win as they battle the Falcons of Jediane, who are second with four points, in a return leg scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.

Meanwhile, at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, Algeria secured a comeback win by defeating Togo 5-1  to maintain their perfect record in Group E.

Thibault Kludge put the visitors ahead in the 11th minute, but Said Benrahma levelled the scoring for the Desert Foxes in the 29th minute.

Algeria, however, enjoyed a contrasting second half, scoring four goals past the the Sparrowhawks with Benrahma completed his brace by netting a penalty in the 55th minute. Thereafter goals from Houssem Aouar, Amine Gouiri and Mohamed Amoura secured all three points for Vladimir Petkovic’s side.

The win keeps the Desert Foxes atop the group with nine points with three wins in as many games, while Togo with two draws and a defeat remain second with two points.

Elsewhere, in Group I, Burkina Faso winger Dango Ouattara scored a brace to help his side to a 4-1 victory over Burundi. Two more goals from Sacha Banse and Issoufou Dayo completed the turnover, as the Burkinabes cancelled out Bienvenue Kanakimana’s fourth minute opener for the visitors.

In Group J, Khama Billiat marked his emotional return to international football with a penalty goal for Zimbabwe in their 1-0 win over Namibia.

Tumisang Orebonye stuck in the second minute at the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde as Botswana stunned Cape Verde to clinch a 1-0 win in their Group C encounter, while DR Congo recorded a 1-0 win over Tanzania thanks to a 53rd minute own goal from Clement Mzize in their Group H match.
